We have an almost 4 year old in our house, which means it was time for a party! G is someone who doesn’t require much to make him happy, which is great, but it also means it’s hard to do something like plan a party. If I ask him what he likes or if he has any toys he’d like, he has a hard time answering. Anything and everything can make him happy, but he’s also happy without.
All he really wants is a soft baa baa and food (or everything his brother has, but I’m not about to plan a party based on what his brother would like). So instead I went with something I’d wanted to do for a while. When I turned 4, my mom’s best friend created a candy train cake for my party. I’ve always wanted to recreate this cake, and this seemed like a good time. G loves candy, and when I asked him about a cake that had candy on it, he responded “Mama when I see it I’m going to fall off my chair!”
It was actually probably one of the easiest cakes I’ve made in a while, since the actual cake was just squares that I frosted, but the cake did require the biggest shopping list of any cake. I had Tom looking for all kinds of specific candy at the store, plus we needed cotton candy and ice cream cones! It was fun to put together and the kids loved eating it. It was an awesome memory experience for me, too. I was looking at old pictures and talking to my mom about the original party, so it was well worth doing.
As for the actual party, G also doesn’t like to be overwhelmed, so a big party isn’t exactly his thing. We went small (which also works with the time of year his birthday falls on) with just his two closest friends. He also gets to celebrate in the summer with an ice cream party, so I think he gets the best of both worlds.
We didn’t really plan any activities - we ate cake, we opened presents, and we let the children run around for a bit. Pure chaos and happiness and everyone slept well that night.
Speaking of sleeping… he’s been sleeping with two of his gifts he got at the party, so I guess that means it was a success.
