Sometimes I have a hard time time coming to terms with the fact that you’ll be two, since for me, time has stood still during this pandemic. Much like my desk calendar in the city, my mind is stuck in March. You know, back before you even knew how to walk? So how can it be that you’re two? On the other hand, it seems like I’ve been telling you forever that you don’t “get” to wear a mask until you’re two! Just a little bit longer to wait, we keep telling you. (Don’t think it’s lost on me that the biggest marker of you turning two will be that you need to be masked now - what a perfect snapshot of our world).
But you are two, and are fast developing into your completely own person. You are very different from your brother, which means your mind also works very different than mine. It’s so much fun to watch you discover things and react in ways that are a complete surprise to me. You still have the best laugh in the family, and when you get overtired you get so loopy and crazy, it almost makes it worth it.
I worry a bit that you’re too quick to gloss over your feelings, claiming “My okay!” minutes after an injury as you quickly try to wipe away the tears. Although, maybe you are. Because when something big happens, you relive it over and over. A balloon popped and scared you recently, and Tom comforted you until you stopped crying. You came over to sit on my lap and over the next ten minutes I could tell you were replaying everything in your mind. “Balloon scared me!” “So loud” “Dah pick me up!” “Scared me” “I sad.”
You seem quite thrilled with this family, kitties and all. You’ve always been first to chase them around, pick them up, and love to pet them. You’ve recently started to switch your parental preference from Tom to me occasionally, but your first love will always be for your brother. You don’t want to go anywhere without him, and want to do everything that he’s doing. You’re also perfecting your role as the younger sibling, by learning how to annoy him all day long. While driving in the car lately, E will say something, and you’ll immediately take the opposite.
E: “Look Mama! Trees!”
G: “No trees.”
E: “Yes trees!”
G: “No trees.”
E: “I saw them! Trees!”
G: “No trees.”
E: “Trees!”
G: “No trees.”
E: “Trees!”
Non stop. All day long. Doesn’t matter what you’re arguing about, but your brother will quickly break out in tears while you giggle to yourself.
G, you are our beam of sunshine and bring us so much happiness and joy. You are the perfect piece our family was missing, and I can’t wait to watch you continue to grow.

I can’t decide if the past 6 months have gone quickly or not. Sometimes it felt like a never ending slog that we were sleepwalking through, but on the other hand I swear we just celebrated F’s first birthday. Either way, we have an official 18 month old on our hands. And thanks to a sleep consultant, we are back on track with sleep and everyone is feeling more like themselves lately. F is back to sleeping and happily chatting in her crib, and it feels like at least one layer of stress has evaporated.
F remains the happiest Spearson, excited to be a part of things, and loves it when we go somewhere. She mostly gets mad when we try to remind her she’s a baby and can’t always do the same things that the older two can. Oh how quickly she’s going to demand equal treatment though. Already she fights back if someone tries to push her away.
