GUESS WHAT HAPPENED
I can’t even make this up.
If you read my end of summer post recently, you know that my kids had one request at the beginning of this summer: get ice cream from an ice cream truck. How hard could that be? I pinky promised.
I don’t even know how many weekends we arranged our plans around finding an ice cream truck. We’d go to a playground we don’t usually go to because we’d heard that the truck goes there. Or we’d take the long way around and drive by a few schools or soccer fields to see if we could find it. We always promised ice cream, so we’d end up at a local place at the end, which kept everyone happy, but no ice cream truck.
And then there was the disaster of the night before school where we just finished eating ice cream only to find the truck. While it would have been perfect to end the summer with the ice cream truck, I wasn’t about to do double ice cream 20 minutes before bedtime.
So labor day weekend I was determined. Even if we were back in school, summer isn’t REALLY over until after labor day weekend, right? It counts?? When we ran into the truck the week prior we got the truck’s number and he promised we could text him to figure out where he was. We ended up not leaving the house on Saturday, but I figured we could do it Sunday or Monday. Instead we were playing outside in the yard. I’d given a 10 minute warning before we headed inside to take baths.
And then I heard it.
The music, and it was getting closer.
I walked down the driveway and suddenly there it was. The ice cream truck was heading up the hill.
I waved both my arms over my head, and saw brake lights! Before I knew it, the truck was backing up INTO OUR DRIVEWAY.
I didn’t even have time to process, as I was just grabbing kids out of the way, but trust me when I say my inner child was jumping up and down. I didn’t grow up in a place where ice cream trucks were a thing, and I could only dream of waving one down to stop at my house.
We all got popsicles and sat on our steps processing what happened. Tom thought I’d called the truck, but it was completely random. I was definitely the coolest mom ever that day - making all our summer dreams come true!
